Qualifying experience or education for the GS-5 level is described in the examples below. A- I have a 4 year degree (or will complete degree requirements within 9 months) with 12 semester hours in the biological, physical or agricultural sciences or math and am providing a copy of my transcripts with my application.
B- I have experience in a slaughter, processing or manufacturing plant which prepares food, beverage or pharmaceuticals for consumption. My experience involves decision making regarding good versus bad product, as well as applying, interpreting and explaining product or sanitation standards. (Non-technical repetitive functions such as basic trimming, packaging, etc. are not qualifying.)
C- I have experience as a meat cutter/butcher that included sanitation responsibilities, working with primal cuts, as well as meeting customer standards. (Basic grinding, slicing and wrapping are not qualifying.)
D- I have quality control or laboratory experience, in the food industry or similar production environment, that involved performing tests, analyzing results, developing processes or formulas and assuring product standards are met.
E- I have managerial or supervisory experience in the food or livestock industry that demonstrates communicating job requirements, evaluating performance, employee training, records management and inventory/budget responsibilities.
F- I have commercial chef/cook experience that involved responsibility for food prep/handling, sanitation practices and use of judgment related to recipes. (Fast food grill experience is not qualifying.)
G- I have experience as a Veterinary Technician conducting lab tests, assessing animals, performing autopsies, monitoring animals under anesthesia or preparing them for surgery and administering medications.
H- I have experience managing a commercial livestock or poultry enterprise that involved monitoring and maintaining air quality, temperature, feed, medications and sanitation.

I- I do not meet any of the specialized experience or education requirements that are stated above for the GS-5 level.

Qualifying experience for the GS-7 level is 1 year of full-time regulatory experience as a state, federal or military food inspector involving ante/post-mortem inspection of meat, poultry or seafood OR processed products inspection involving meat, poultry, seafood or egg products. (Inspection of dining or storage facilities, commissary or boxed beef experience is not qualifying at the GS-7 level).

A- I have at least 1 year of qualifying experience as a state, federal or military food inspector and will provide details of that experience in my resume.
