5. This position requires previous wildland firefighting experience which provided knowledge of the techniques, policies, and practices of wildland fire management. A minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required to meet qualifications for this secondary (administrative) covered position. Wildland firefighting experience is defined as on-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wildland fire. Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. The three distinct types of wildland fire are wildfire, wildland fire use, and prescribed fire (includes only fireline experience on a prescribed fire and does not include experience in the planning stages). A. I have at least 1 year of creditable specialized wildland fire management experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that demonstrated an understanding of fire behavior relative to fuels, weather, and topography and how fire effects natural and cultural resources. Typical assignments include: 1) Participating in implementing prescribed fire or fire use plans to ensure resource objectives can be met from a fire management standpoint, and 2) Developing initial attack incident management strategies and tactics to meet the stated resouce objectives.

B. I have successfully completed 1 full year of graduate-level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or equivalent).

C. I have a combination of specialized experience as described in A and graduate education as described in B when combined together meets 100% of the total requirements for the position. Specialized experience includes the following: 1) Experience that demonstrated understanding of fire effects on cultural and natural resources, i.e., developing fire management plans to ensure plan objectives can be met from a fire management standpoint; and conducting field inspections before and/or after prescribed fires or wildland fires to determine if objectives have been met; 2) Prescribed fire/fuels management experience, i.e., inventory methods and procedures; fuel treatment methods and programming; and evaluating prescribed fire plans or fire management plans to ensure containment is possible and identify appropriate contingencies if containment is not obtained; and 3) Fire management operations - analyzing and applying fire management strategies, plus experience in at least four of the following activities: mobilization and dispatch coordination; fire prevention; training; logistics; equipment development and deployment; fire communications systems; and suppression and preparedness.

B. I have a Master's Degree or equivalent graduate degree; OR I have successfully completed 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's Degree.

C. I have a combination of specialized experience as described in A and more than 1 year of graduate education as described in B when combined together meets 100% of the total requirements for the position.
